How do I choose the right oil for my hair’s porosity?

Hair can be divided into low-, medium- and ultra-porous hair types. Knowing what type of hair you have makes it much easier to find the right oil to take better care of it. It is important to know the porosity of your hair and to choose the right products based on it.

How do I know my hair’s porosity?

You can quickly recognize your hair’s porosity by observing your hair. If your hair is shiny, has no split ends and feels nice to the touch, it is called low porosity hair. Semi-porous hair has a slightly different texture and is not as shiny, but still has a certain smoothness to it. High-Resistant hair is quite dry, which is often frizzy after washing and drying and is more difficult to style. Highly porous hair is dry hair, which is often frizzy after shampooing and drying and does not lend itself well to styling. Porosity is the ability of hair to absorb nutrients. Unfortunately, hair with a high porosity level absorbs nutrients easily, but it also loses them quickly. They also tend to dry out. It is best to check the condition of hair under a special microscope at a trichologist, who will also check whether the hair scales are rather closed or open and will tell us what hair cosmetics are best for us.

If you are unable to find out exactly what type of hair you have, it is worth using ready-made or self-made oil blends, which can be easily done at home. Such blends include sesame oil with avocado oil, olive oil with cottonseed oil or macadamia oil with grape seed oil

Blends of oils, one of which will be heavier and the other a little lighter, is a good option for medium-porous hair, which needs moisturizing, but on the other hand, cannot be overloaded with too many cosmetics in order not to lose the effect of smoothing the hair cuticles.

For very porous hair, oil blends or oils with a thicker consistency are useful. These include polyunsaturated oils such as chia seed oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, sweet cinnamon oil and borage oil.

For medium-porous hair, monounsaturated oils such as olive oil, sunflower oil, macadamia oil, sesame oil and peanut oil are good choices. Canola oil, apricot oil and avocado oil are also very suitable for all-purpose hair

Low-porous hair works very well with oils such as coconut oil, palm oil as well as shea butter and mango or cocoa butter. They are quite light and do not weigh hair down.

It is accepted that hair oils are meant to moisturize the hair, but this is not true. Oil protects hair from moisture loss and additionally allows nutrients to penetrate the hair’s structure, affecting its elasticity. In addition, oil makes the hair much more manageable.

How Should you use hair oil?

Oil does not weigh hair down and the right hair care technique can make you forget about such problems as split ends or combing hair forever. Apply a small amount of oil to the entire length of your hair, preferably dry, wait a bit, and then wash your hair with your favorite shampoo. You may prefer not to use a conditioner afterwards but only a light mist, which protects your hair if you want to style it with a curling iron for example. Another way to treat your hair with oil is to spray it with an oil mist. The mist consists of a mixture of oil, hydrolate, and water. Hydrolate can be purchased at a drug or cosmetics store. It is advisable to add e.g. glycerine or aloe vera to the mist
